Multi Beam Radar

The Ogden Multi Beam Radar has been designed for anti collision applications in arduous working conditions, It has been developed from many years experience in reverse protection on quarry machines and more recently, refuse collection vehicles.

It uses the FMCW principle and creates a precise detection zone by using multiple beams, each specially designed to minimise the difference in detection area between large and small objects.

It is housed in a heavy duty steel case with a 6 mm polycarbonate window, designed to withstand harsh environments.

FMCW radar is unaffected by dirt, dust, rain and other environmental factors which can affect other technologies.

Set up procedure

The radar communicates with the cab unit using a robust industry standard RS232 link. This same link enables radar settings to be changed remotely after installation. The set up programme, RadarSetup, will run on any Windows PC and provides a simple graphical interface to display and change the detection zones. Set up programme demo.

Each radar can be preprogrammed with multiple detection pattern options which can be selected remotely. This may be selected on installation or via the cab display unit or automatically in response to vehicle speed.

By using carefully designed beam shapes, sensitivity levels can be set higher than many other sensors, giving a repeatable, positive, detection signal right to the edge of the detection zone

1. Poorly defined protection zone

It is important to design the protection zone to include only the zone where you want to detect hazards. A zone which is too wide may give unnecessary alarms. If the zone includes the ground this may give very few unnecessary alarms on smooth ground but excessive alarms on rough ground.

The RadarSetup programme is designed to allow the horizontal shape of the zone to be carefully tailored to suit the application and to display the vertical shape. When mounting the radar, consideration needs to be given to situations where the zone may include unwanted reflections.

2. Large reflective objects outside the intended detection zone.

Large objects or metal objects with concave faces can reflect very much stronger signals than a person. Radar beams (and most other sensor beams) are strongest in the centre and weaker at the edges. Ogden radar beams are carefully designed so that the signal falls off rapidly at angles greater than the intended detection angle. Thus more reflective objects are only detected at slightly wider angles than a person.

3. Objects within the detection zone after the machine has stopped.

If a machine reverses towards an object and stops, the radar will recognise the object as no longer a hazard and will cease to alarm. However the natural movement of a person, even when standing still, is sufficient to trigger an alarm

4. Objects passing through the detection zone but moving away from the radar

Ogden radars have an optional setting in each detection zone to ignore objects which are not moving towards the radar. This enables a warning system to be installed without any need to connect the system to a reversing switch. It can therefore warn of traffic approaching from the rear and about to overtake but ignore objects going the other way.
